Role Overview

The Trainee Geotechnical Assistant will support geotechnical and ground investigation projects through site visits, setting out works, ground and gas monitoring, and sample collection. This practical, site-based role is ideal for someone looking to develop a career in geotechnical engineering, ground investigation, construction, or environmental site work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend site visits and assist engineers and supervisors with geotechnical and ground investigation works.
  • Mark out trial pits, boreholes, monitoring points, and other investigation locations as directed.
  • Carry out ground and gas monitoring, record readings, and collect accurate field data.
  • Collect, label, log, store, and transport soil, water, gas, and other site samples correctly.
  • Prepare, check, load, unload, and maintain site equipment and monitoring instruments.
  • Record field notes, photographs, measurements, and sample information for project records.
  • Follow health and safety procedures and support general site duties and project administration as required.

Training and Development

Full training will be provided by experienced geotechnical staff. The successful candidate will learn safe site working, monitoring, sampling, and ground investigation methods, and will be supported through day-release study towards an HNC in Civil Engineering.

Skills and Attributes

  • Interest in geotechnical engineering, construction, surveying, or environmental site work.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in different weather and site conditions.
  • Practical, reliable, and able to follow instructions carefully.
  • Good attention to detail when recording data, labelling samples, and completing paperwork.
  • Good communication, teamwork, basic numeracy, literacy, and IT skills.
  • Positive attitude to health and safety, training, travel, and flexible site working hours.

Requirements

  • No previous geotechnical experience required; practical, outdoor, or construction site experience would be beneficial.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence and ability to travel to sites.
  • Must live within 30 miles of Glasgow City Centre.
  • Willingness to complete site safety training and follow company procedures.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Reporting Line

Reports to the Geotechnical Project Manager, depending on project requirements.
