As a part-time Research Associate in the Centre for Teaching Excellence’s Strathclyde Hub for Innovative Pedagogy, you will support the Hub lead in generating research outputs from Hub activity. This may include synthesising and reviewing international research, identifying key themes and disseminating in accessible ways for a professional community audience, researching the Hub process, and supporting teaching associates in bridging research into practice communities. You will be supported by the Hub lead, Professor Kate Wall, and work collegiately with a wider team of colleagues, including seconded teacher associates based in the Hub as well as teams working in the Centre for Teaching Excellence and another 5 Hubs located at other Scottish HEIs. You will therefore be part of a team contributing to a profile of research and professional learning that will be rolled out across Scotland.

The Strathclyde Hub for Innovative Pedagogies aims to combine high level international research with teacher led case studies in the field, so you will be part of broader project developing teacher research through practitioner enquiry as well as conducting individual and collaborative research, contributing to the development of new research and pedagogic methods for Scottish education. You will contribute to developing creative, accessible and inclusive new ways of working that will form a base for developing sustainable models for the forward trajectory of the Hub’s work. You will write up research work for publication, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminate the results via publications and presentation at conferences targeting academic and professional audiences. You will contribute to CLPL and professional learning opportunities for Scottish teachers and join external networks, academic and professional, to share information and ideas, which in turn will inform the development of future research objectives and potential future funding.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of doctorate level in education or an associated discipline. You will also have significant relevant professional experience. You will therefore have academic knowledge and skills of literature searching, reviewing and synthesis for different audiences, and practice knowledge and skills of pedagogic approaches, Scottish education, and practitioner enquiry for professional learning. A developing ability to conduct individual research work, to disseminate results and to prepare research proposals will also be useful You will have an ability to plan and organise your own workload effectively while also working within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.

Essential for this role is experience and practice as a teacher in the Scottish education system. Applications are welcomed from candidates sharing relevant work experience, membership of relevant Chartered/professional bodies, professional learning and leadership activities, and/or experience of knowledge exchange related activities.

Whilst a Post-Doctoral Research Associate is ideally sought for this position; applications from candidates who are close to PhD completion or whose award is pending, are welcome. In such circumstances, the appointment will be made at Research Assistant level (grade 6) and duties will be adjusted to reflect the grade of the post. This will continue until the PhD award is confirmed, at which point the duties and grade will be revised accordingly

Research Starter Grant

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a Research Starter Grant to all new full-time, non-professorial, academic staff within the Faculty. The Grant may be used for any purpose that assists staff to establish their Strathclyde research career and to assist in attracting additional funding for research from external sources. Any grant awarded will be to a maximum of £10,000, and the planned expenditure of the award is normally for a period of 18 months. Departments may, however, add to the value of this award.
