Who we need

We are looking to recruit an Engineering Workshop Technician to join our Engineering team based at our Highfields Campus.

This is a varied and hands-on role supporting the delivery of practical engineering education. Our Engineering department covers a range of disciplines, including welding and fabrication, machining, mechanical engineering, 3D printing/additive manufacturing and electronics.

You will work closely with teaching staff to ensure our workshops, equipment and practical learning environments are safe, well organised and ready for learners.

Key duties will include:

• Setting up and preparing practical training environments, workshops and equipment for teaching and assessment.
• Supporting practical activities across areas such as welding, fabrication, machining, mechanical engineering, 3D printing and electronics.
• Carrying out regular checks and basic maintenance of machinery, tools and workshop equipment.
• Moving and handling equipment, materials and machinery safely where required.
• Supporting the safe operation of engineering machinery and equipment.
• Providing technical support to teaching staff and learners during practical activities.
• Helping learners use tools, machinery and equipment safely and appropriately.
• Maintaining accurate records relating to equipment, maintenance, stock and workshop activities.
• Monitoring stock levels and assisting with the ordering of materials, components, tools and other workshop consumables.
• Identifying equipment faults and arranging or reporting repairs where required.
• Ensuring workshops and practical areas are maintained to a high standard.
• Following college health and safety procedures and contributing to a safe working environment.
• Understanding and following risk assessments, COSHH requirements and relevant workshop safety procedures. Training will be provided where required.
• Working proactively and using initiative, while also working effectively as part of the wider Engineering team.

What you'll bring

We are looking for someone with a passion for engineering and practical workshop activities, who can adapt to the varied requirements of an FE Engineering environment.

You will ideally have practical experience in one or more areas of engineering, such as welding, fabrication, machining, mechanical engineering, electronics or 3D printing/additive manufacturing.

You will also bring:

• Good practical engineering and workshop skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to work positively with young people and support learners undertaking practical activities.
• The ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
• A proactive approach, with the ability to work using your own initiative and with limited supervision.
• Good organisational and record-keeping skills.
• A willingness to learn and develop your technical knowledge across different areas of engineering.
• An understanding of health and safety within an engineering/workshop environment.
• Experience of risk assessments and COSHH would be an advantage, although full training will be provided where appropriate.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team and build positive working relationships with teaching staff and other college colleagues.
