Michael Varnam House - 18 flats (1 is an NHS Detox Bed) MVH is gated and controlled access to exit the service.

All staff are Support Planners - The service is staffed 24 hours and has a team of night workers.

Staff undertake calls for the Out Of Hours Service in the evenings, through the night and weekends, completing associated paperwork and making enquiries regarding the emergency calls received.

Staff support residents and Run SMART Recovery sessions weekly- empowering recovery through self management. Support is provided around individual Support needs, Independent living skills, move on support, engagement with substance treatment agencies and any other support needs that are identified at move in. The detox provision ( NHS Bed ) is now delivered under the governance arrangements of Nottingham Recovery Network, ensuring robust clinical oversight and quality assurance. This partnership has enabled the service to maintain a safe and effective community-based detoxification pathway. The model remains unique in its ability to combine accommodation, specialist alcohol support, and detoxification within a single service setting.

MVH has also delivers SMART Recovery programmes on site, with all staff trained in the model. SMART Recovery is an internationally recognised, evidence-based programme based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) principles, supporting individuals to develop practical skills for long-term recovery and positive behavioural change.

In addition to delivering specialist alcohol interventions, the MVH team undertakes a highly complex and diverse range of responsibilities. Staff work daily with individuals experiencing alcohol dependence and substance-related issues, managing associated risks, supporting detoxification programmes, undertaking safeguarding responsibilities, and coordinating care with a range of partner agencies and healthcare professionals.

Alongside these specialist functions, the service also manages the organisation's Out of Hours Service, providing support to all Framework services. Responsibilities include:

  • Responding to calls from dispersed accommodation services and service users.
  • Providing advice and support to staff across multiple services.
  • Managing operational issues, including staff sickness and emergency staffing arrangements.
  • Coordinating responses with the on-call Duty Manager.
  • Arranging emergency repairs and liaising with contractors.
  • Ensuring service continuity and effective incident management outside normal working hours.

All MVH staff participate in the Out of Hours rota while continuing to deliver their core service responsibilities, including support planning, risk assessment and management, safeguarding, recovery-focused interventions, and operational service delivery. Staff therefore require a broad range of skills encompassing accommodation support, alcohol treatment, substance misuse knowledge, crisis management, partnership working, and organisational coordination.

The service has a combination of specialist alcohol treatment, detoxification support, recovery interventions, accommodation provision, and responsibility for the organisation's out-of-hours function
